Following

So, I found Following on Netflix, so naturally, considering that I’m seeing Interstellar this weekend, I had to watch it.

For those of you who don’t know, Following is Christopher Nolan’s first film, made in 1998 in London.

It’s about a struggling young writer who stalks people to come up with “story ideas” which quickly leads to more of an obsession. One day he follows someone for too long and they notice. They approach him, demanding why he’s following them. He manages to nervously stumble out his lifestyle, and the man offers to take him along on a home burglary. Intrigued, he says yes, but unknowingly gets sucked into a dangerous lifestyle that ultimately proves his demise.

It’s an interesting film, just barely over an hour, so it’s definitely watchable. It’s in black and white, which is interesting, I think he did that so it would be cheaper, their budget was like $5,000 or something small. But anyway, I think it’s a good example of Christopher Nolan’s writing, it has a great twist in the end. I can totally see his style evolve and progress as well, from Following to Momento, both have great stories and twists.

The one thing that I didn’t enjoy as much is that the first half of the movie is a bit confusing, since it’s not told chronologically, a lot of it is out of order, and it’s hard to tell who is who, but in the end it all connects anyway, so I guess it’s fine.

Well, I just wanted to write a little blurb about it, go watch it if you have time! It just makes me even more excited for Interstellar, 2 days!
