Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 Review

So, just saw the newest Hunger Games, I know it’s a little late, but I saw it anyway.

MockingjayPart1I thought it was good, I enjoyed it, even though it was another one of those final chapters in a trilogy or saga that they decided to split into 2 movies, even if it wasn’t necessary, kind of like the last Harry Potter or The Hobbit, which was split into 3 unnecessary movies. This was sort of the build up to the finale, it was pretty intense, but didn’t finish anything. I had heard from a few different people that it wasn’t that great, but I enjoyed it, I feel like this happens a lot with stories that are split up, the first one is more of a build-up to the second one.

Towards the end I was anticipating an exciting point for it to cut out of and end, and it did, it just went on a little longer than I had thought. Now, I haven’t read the books, so I wasn’t too sure what was going to happen next, but the last 10 minutes or so were very intense and exhilarating. I think Part 2 will be even crazier, considering the end of this movie, you know what I’m talking about if you’ve seen it, with Peeta.

There wasn’t a whole lot of action in this movie, compared with the first two, but there was some pretty cool scenes, like when that group was bum-rushing the dam at the capitol. That was pretty exciting, or when they fought back in the forest, that was pretty cool. I would have liked to see a bit more, but I think the focus of this movie was less on the action and more on the emotional side of the story, especially between Katniss and Peeta. Since Peeta was kidnapped by the Capitol, they have no contact, and it becomes clear that Peeta has been brainwashed by the Capitol, and Katniss has no control over it, so there’s a lot of emotional tension there.

I’m excited to see what happens with this relationship and how they handle Peeta going through re-conditioning since the Capitol has messed him up so much.

Another tough scene was when they found that make-shift hospital, but the Capitol bombs it. But you know what, it’s almost Katniss’ fault that it gets destroyed because her and Gale shoot down two of the bomber jets and they crash into the building, so I’m curious if that will come back to haunt them, since it was caught on film. I’m sure that you know already if you’ve read the book, but I’m excited to see what happens in Part 2.

I’d give this movie a 3 and 1/2 stars because it felt like a build-up to a better Part 2 rather than it’s own movie, which makes sense, but the story and action was well done, with an intense ending and hook leading to the next film. So I would definitely recommend it.
