So I watched The Naked Gun again today, for like the 20th time probably. I still love it, so freaking funny! Jokes left and right, they never stop!
Leslie Nielsen is such a funny actor, but he never tells any jokes or laughs, he always has a straight face no matter what, which makes it that much better.
If you haven’t seen it, it’s about a police lieutenant, Frank Drebin, trying to solve an attempted murder case on his own police partner. But while trying to solve that, he stumbles upon a bigger case of attempted murder on Queen Elizabeth, who is making a US tour, and stopping by LA. The cases seem to weave together and are more connected than they appear.
O.J. Simpson is in this movie too, which is kind of funny, it’s before all of the murder trials and everything. But anyway, it’s based off of the unfortunately short-lived but hilarious TV series Police Squad from the early 80’s. That show is so hilarious, if you haven’t seen it, you must! It’s only 6 episodes, and you can find it on amazon.com for super cheap, do it!
So there’s a lot of recurring jokes throughout the movie, some of them are carried over from the TV series, like how every time he parks his car it crashes into something. Or Big Al, another officer who’s face you never see because he’s too tall and his head is cut off by the camera framing.
Even though there are a few recurring jokes throughout, I think this movie really takes the Police Squad TV series one step further. It’s jokes and sets are on a grander scale, probably because of it’s budget, and because of it’s plot. There’s a lot more thought in this plot than in the TV series, which makes sense. But watching the TV series first helps you understand the comedy of the movie better, or the origin of the comedy.
At any rate, this movie is hilarious and I definitely recommend it to everyone. So if you haven’t seen it, go out and see it!
I give this one a 5/5 rating
